If you go into a battle knowing nothing about how to control the Vertical Tank, there's not going to be any sort of game. Well, if you had no driving license, let's say, and entered a race, you'd never win when pitted against other experts. Inaba-san: After thinking about online play, I decided to go with single player-only first because. So what made you decide to give us single player-only to start with, and then add online capability at a later date? Why not provide both in one package? Beyond the Generation classification, VTs are further broken down by role type, which included Standard Combat, Support (artillery), Assault (front line combat), Scout (reconnaissance) and Light (typically fast hit-and-run assault VTs). The loss of 3rd generation machines within a battle would often result in defeat, however fielding a 3rd generation VT afforded a team a large advantage. 3rd Generation VTs are the epitome of VT design and performance, but also very expensive to field. 2nd Generation VTs have increased armor, speed and performance capabilities. These units are generally very cheap in comparison to the later generations and are easily disposable in the battle field. 1st Generation VTs are generally slower and less unresponsive, have lower armor ratings, firepower or range. Vertical tanks are classed across a number of different performance specifications, with the most generalized being Generation. There are a total of 10 new VTs introduced in this game, for a total of 31 different models. Players connecting with less than 100 kB/s up and 300 kB/s down are usually limited to 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 combat. The game can support up to 10 players (5 vs 5), and each player must have an Xbox, Xbox Live (unless playing through system-link), and the special controller ( Mega Jockey 9000) to play the game.

Conquest, Battle Royal, and Capture the Container are variations of Free Mission. Gameplay consists of two modes: Campaign (defunct as of September 30, 2005) and Free Mission. Steel Battalion: Line of Contact consists of multiplayer PvP matches played online over Xbox Live during its availability, or through local system link. The returning Jaralaccs Mercenaries are soldiers of fortune, hiring their services out to the highest bidder and not above fighting each another if sided against one another in inter-faction battles. The Right Brothers are described as a separatist guerilla group from the northern provinces of Sea City Island and do not agree with either the Hai Shi Dao or Pacific Rim Forces doctrines, wishing to return rule to the native population of the island. During the course of the conflict, two other factions are introduced, the Right Brothers and the returning Jaralaccs Mercenaries. The Pacific Rim Forces have now come to invade the island and put down the rebellion. Loosely following the history of the original Steel Battalion game, the faction of Hai Shi Dao has once again seceded from the general governmental body of the Pacific Rim Forces after a period of civil and political unrest.

The ongoing conflict takes place on the island of Sea City Island, often referred to as Hai Shi Dao.

The environment supposed by the game takes place in a fictional future where the primary weapons of choice are Vertical Tanks, which have begun replacing standard tank divisions.
